Hosta 'Fire Island'
A small to medium sized hosta that is hard to miss in the spring garden
- Leaves emerge brilliant yellow on red petioles; red coloring extends from the base of the petiole up into the leaves
- As the season progresses, the foliage darkens to chartreuse, but the red petioles remain all season long
- The broadly ovate leaves are slightly corrugated with distinctly rippled margins at maturity
- Lavender flowers are produced in midsummer
- Vigorous grower; best in full shade
Hostas are exceedingly popular perennials in today's gardens due to their versatility in the landscape. Their subtle colors, tall flower scapes, and broad, coarse leaves fill a niche in garden designs that few other plants can achieve. Their large leaves provide excellent coverage for dying bulb foliage. Hostas also grow well in city environments where the air may be polluted by car exhaust, etc.
