Sourwood Seedlings

The Sourwood tree is also known by the scientific name Oxydendrum Arboreum. This particular tree displays some of the most beautiful fall foliage that there is to be seen. The tree can be found north of Virginia state and south as the northern portion of Florida. In terms of longitude, this tree plant may be seen as far West as Ohio and as far East as Pennsylvania. The tree is prevalent in the Southern states of Louisiana and Mississippi. This is a beautiful tree for landscaping purposes and is appreciated for its beauty and versatility in habitat.

  What's in a Name?

Believe it or not, this tree has earned its name because of its leaves' sour taste. It is also known as the Sorrel tree because a common edible plant named Sorrel possesses a certain sour taste similar to that of the leaves on this sapling.

  Height and Foliage

During the Fall months, this tree turns a vibrant flame red. In addition to its beautiful leaves, the tree also offers lovely flower plumes. The leaves begin to change color in the late Summer and reach their full vibrancy in the Autumn season. During this time, the leaves may even border on purple shades as it reaches its full-color animation. The lighter shade of its spectrum is a bright yellow color.

This tree can grow to remarkable heights in many of its environments. At its most, this tree is known to grow up to 30 feet tall. Additionally, the tree spans a vast plane in its growth. Sourwood seedlings can grow outward for up to about 20 feet.

While the Sourwood tree does not grow incredibly quickly, it is notable for its steady growth in reaching height and width.

 Ideal Growing Conditions

This seedling will see its most significant growth results in a soil that is considerably well-drained. This means that the soil should not be overly moist and contain material to break up the soil's denser portion. There should be loam, sand, and small fibrous materials in the soil to ensure proper drainage. It is also advised that the soil for this type of seedling be slightly acidic. This benefits this particular type of tree.

The Sourwood seedlings grow best in full sun.

Should it be necessary for the tree to receive partial shade during its growth, the plant will tolerate it. Luckily, this tree is unknown to have many issues with pests such as bugs or destructive rodents. It is reasonably healthy by nature and does not suffer from many ailments. Sourwood seedlings grow their best in Hardiness Zones 5-9.

 Blossoms Attract Bees

The blossoms on the Sourwood tree are known for their beauty. These flowers emerge in the Summer months and are pale pink. These lovely flowers are, not surprisingly, attractive in many ways to bees. These wildlife insects are drawn to the flowers for the sweet taste of their nectar. When the bees pollinate these flowers, they then produce honey with the flavor of the flowers. This type of honey is much sought after in the world of honeybee cultivation. It contains a distinctive flavor that is attributed to the Sourwood tree itself.

The Sourwood sapling is a lovely addition to the landscaping design. Named after their sour-tasting leaves, these trees grow to marked heights, display beautifully vibrant foliage, grow best in well-drained soil, thrive in full sun, and produce the loveliest of flowers. The trees are a delight to be seen and are a pleasure to nurture into full cultivation. They enhance the natural landscape surrounding the home with both their beautiful red and purple leaves and their attraction from wildlife. These trees are a treasure to behold.
